Changes Coming In October

UPDATE OCTOBER 11: All available space prior to the price change has been claimed, therefor I have made the new prices live on this site ahead of schedule.

Here are the changes coming in October:

Prices for all items have changed

Some of the available commissions have changed

  • All of the standard character art options offered before are still available. Single/Double character sketch, line art, flats, basic, deluxe and digital painted are all still available.
  • I have added the option to get a partial sketch and partial line art
  • I have removed the option to get sketches colorized
  • I have changed the sketch style back to a more rendered style that includes a gray tone wash. Example coming later.
  • I have removed the option to get full scene backgrounds for single/double character artwork. See Additional Options for more info.
  • I have removed physical badge upgrades as I do not have a cost effective or timely way to produce them. I can still design your badge but you will need to find other ways to produce it yourself.
  • Real Media commissions will only be offered occasionally in small quantities for specific items.
  • Only one additional character will be allowed before being considered a full illustration. See additional Options for more info.

Additional Options

  • Vignettes: In lieu of full spread backgrounds for single/dual character art, I will be offering simplified background elements surrounding the immediate vicinity of the character. This will typically start at 50% the total character art.
  • Extra Character Discount: 10% off the base price of the extra character. One additional character added to the composition. Note: Depending on the size/complexity, certain pets/familiars/etc may be priced as an additional character instead of a prop.
  • Illustrations: Any piece that has more than two characters and/or a full spread background. Illustrations have a different pricing structure and because of the amount of work they require will only be accepted on a case by case basis.

Examples for all the changes coming soon.

So, why the changes?

I thought over these changes for a long while. I was particularly concerned being that the price jump was a lot higher (in most cases more than doubling the original price)  than all my previous increases. This also comes on the heels of a usual price increase back at the beginning of the year, and other changes to my commission offerings like the removal of hourly sketch pages.

The truth of the matter is I’ve been getting dangerously burnt out in recent years and have struggled tremedously trying to figure out what to do about it. I love my job, but I had inadvertently painted myself into a corner that small changes once or twice a year were not going to fix. Creative energy is a finite resource and I am in need of finding a balance. Other endeavors have suffered and I need to find a way to share the energy while still making sure the bills get paid. Creating art is also hard on the body when you do it every day. I’ve had a lot of issues regarding my back and neck and the tell tale signs of wrist and joint problems.

I realize that this pretty large price increase is probably quite the sticker shock to regulars and may even make my work inaccessible to some repeat clients. Increasing prices is scary and uncomfortable, especially in this financial climate, but I am hoping the benefits will outweigh the negatives.

I hope to have a stronger emphasis on quality artwork in addition to the quality service. Works will always be produced in a timely fashion and I am not changing my hours nor instituting quotas, dealer’s choice or lotteries on any of the listed commissions. But now I hopefully won’t have to worry about trying to fit too much on my plate.

I hope this will leave me with more energy to share among my other neglected projects, like printmaking and other real media artwork. Growing as an artist can be difficult when you do it for a living.

I hope this will alleviate the need for me to push myself too hard, physically. I am not as young as I used to be, and did not heed the warnings of not taking care of your body in your youth.

This should be my last price increase for a long time. I may adjust some things along the way as I continue to find balance, but I think I’ll be a lot happier with this arrangement. I look forward to serving everyone I am lucky enough to earn their business from!

These changes will take place October 15th, 2020. Until then, everything will be the same and you can schedule any current commission offering at current prices until then.
